From A Wishlist To (Finally) My Closet: Gucci The New Princetown Mules
An everyday pair for every occasion, from my wishlist since 2015 to my shoe rack at last.
I guess emergency fund is something everyone should have. Take this example for instance, you were traveling and suddenly had to make a purchase you didn’t plan you’d make. Yup, that happened to me on my last trip. But this is a happy purchase indeed.
I had been eyeing on this Gucci Princetown mules, right before it was happening back in the late 2010’s when it seemed like everyone had a pair, at least. I always knew they would end up on my shoe rack one day. At the time with limited pocket money, purchasing them were almost impossible and needed several considerations. Even after months of saving it was still too extravagant, so I had to wait.
Then the priorities kept changing from time to time, shifting from one to another. I started to forget about these slip-ons after a while, but never completely. Every once in a while I’d walked into the boutique to try them on again, just to refresh the repetitive question: “Do I really want them?” The answer was always a firm yes, but I thought there would always be another time to get them and I should choose something else more practical and useful instead.
With the price going up I started to look for the preloved ones. There were a couple that I found but didn’t buy them after thinking for too long and someone got them before me. It was sad but actually I’m actually glad. I have been wanting them for so long might as well get them fresh from the boutique. So I tried my luck in Hong Kong after ten years of waiting, was surprised when the sales assistant looked at me dismissively and told me that The Princetown has been discontinued. Regretful? Completely, but I am sure there will be another pair I can get.
Just last month I was traveling without any plan to shop, I walked into Harrods and found this pair with a new name of the mules as informed by my SA. I tried them once again and slept on it before buying. I asked my friends whether i should get them or not, they knew it has been on my list the longest time. At some point i started to forget about them. On my last shopping day, I was strolling along Bond Street for some errands, not knowing I’d pass by a Gucci boutique. Since I still had a couple of minutes why not walked in again. Guess what, the next minute I was trying them one last time and when I asked whether or not they have the new pair my friendly SA told me they are the only pair left and she just put it on display that morning. This time without any hesitation I’m bringing them home with me.
These mules have been my go to lately when I’m running late. Pretty much elevate and goes well with my everyday looks. With the new leather they are using they are much more comfortable than the original Princetown. They use softer leather which makes them more walkable and less stiff. The best part is they no longer use gold hardware for their famous Horsebit chain, they use silver this time. The only cons I’ve had back then was the gold hardware they use. With the new hardware they are using, I feel this mules is more me. They also improved the insole which is puffier and more comfortable now. As for the sole they can be a little bit slippery sometimes, but still manageable. I personally like to pair them with my jeans or baggy pants, making them casual but too sloppy.
After nearly 11 years of waiting I finally managed to move another pair from my wishlist to my actual rack, this of course means using my emergency fund. At least this time I’m not using it for something unthinkable. What item would you use your saving cushion for?
